"El año que trafiqué
con mujeres" tells the story of Antonio (Nacho Novo), a
famous current affairs journalist whose investigations focus
on social issues, his ambition leads him to infiltrate the world
of high-class prostitution, a scene populated by dubious characters
and women famous for their appearances on gossip programmes.
He enlists the help of a TV presenter, Noelia (Raquel Meroño),
an ex-girlfriend, and Juan (Antonio Dechent), a friend and one-time
policeman who runs a security agency.
The friend, believing himself to be the inspiration for the
investigation, takes him to a nightclub to show him the murkier
side of prostitution, a world where women have been tricked
into moving abroad under false pretences and end up exploited,
humiliated and abused. The experience causes Antonio to rethink
the focus of the documentary and he decides to combine the
current report he is working on with an exposé on this
underworld of mafia-like organisations, extortion and blackmail.
He becomes gradually aware of what he is uncovering but at
the same time he starts to feel attracted towards one of the
prostitutes, Susy (Jennifer Rope), making him vulnerable but
he fails to realise he is being lured into the lion's den
and that his life and everyone else who is helping him are
in mortal danger.
